Momma's Apple Pie
My husband and I hosted our first Thanksgiving this year as newlyweds for his family. This was the first time I cooked Thanksgiving dinner without my Mom in the kitchen. I was nervous to say the least. But like anything in life, a little discomfort is typically followed by a nice surprise! Below is a version of my Mom’s Apple Pie recipe! The secret is in the crumble. It is not always the prettiest pie but it is delicious after thanksgiving dinner and even better the next morning with coffee!
Ingredients
Filling
7-8 Granny Smith Apples
1/2 c sugar (I use truvia baking blend/75% fewer calories and pure cane sugar)
1/2 c light brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp all spice
1/4 c flour
1 tsp vanilla
Crumble
1 c flour
1/3 c sugar
1/3 c light brown sugar
1/2 stick of butter (my mom uses 1 stick..but mine tasted just as good as hers does! ;)
1 tsp cinnamon
2 pie crusts (I buy pillsbury pre-made)
Method
Pre-heat oven at 375. Peel and slice the apples—place in a large mixing bowl. In another smaller bowl, mix the remaining filling ingredients. Sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, all-spice, vanilla & flour. Once mixed well, add to the large mixing bowl with the apples. Mix all ingredients! Press pie crust in a deep dish pie dish and add apple mixture. It will be very full and look like too much—but it isn’t!
Lay the second pie crush on parchment paper and cut into thin long strips, make a nice lattice. (It really wont be seen so don’t spend to much time on it ha!)
You can repurpose the smaller mixing bowl and begin to make the crumble topping. Mix all ingredients besides the butter and once mixed well add butter. You want it to be a nice crumbly consistency!
Add ALL of the crumble to the top of the pie! Place pie dish on cookie sheet with foil, it can boil out and make a huge mess in your oven. Bake for 50-60 minutes! The crumble should turn a nice golden brown and the apples will be boiling up. Thats when you know its ready! Enjoy!
PRO TIP: Serve with VANILLA ICE CREAM!
